CLUTCH Magazine Denim
It all began from the founder’s desire to own items that he wanted to wear.
Everything from the fabric, stitching, and even the threads used are carefully selected to make THE FLAT HEAD’s denim. By repeating the same processes, from the number of times the threads are dyed to the sewing machines used for the stitching, the brand has established its own identity. Having achieved wide recognition from throughout the world, we talked to THE FLAT HEAD’s CEO and brand director Masayoshi Kobayashi about his thoughts towards denim.
“Before I started this brand, I ran a used clothing store in my hometown of Nagano. When I think back about it, that really was the starting point of where I am now. Simply buying used clothes from the United States and selling it made you no different than any other store. That is why I decided to display the highest quality used clothing in the store and repair damaged clothing by myself. By repairing so many vintage jeans, I was able to learn things like different manufacturing methods and what set apart low and high quality stitching. The reason why I decided to start my own brand was very simple. I thought it would be cool if there were jeans that better matched my style. In the beginning I didn’t have much knowledge about the threads, fabrics, and dyes used to make the denim, so it was a good chance for me to ask many questions and absorb as much as I could. I was able to meet so many people who were willing to answer all my questions and provide me with the opportunity to try things my own way to achieve what I wanted, which is why I was able to start this brand. I was able very picky about small details, and I was able to accumulate various knowhow by constantly pushing myself to try different things. I think that is where THE FLAT HEAD’s originality was formed. Sometimes I think that I get too obsessed with details that some people might not be able to understand, but even when there are times where my products won’t sell because of passing trends, I want to continue making things that I am personally satisfied with that our customers will appreciate.”
15 years since the brand was founded, Kobayashi feels like this is the time to return THE FLAT HEAD to its roots. By taking a fresh look at their standard items and re-examining the extensive knowhow accumulated over the years, he wants to create products that will be appreciated throughout the world. THE FLAT HEAD is looking ahead to the future to continue making high quality denim that can withstand the test of time.
